We had an excellent discussion on The Help and will plan a movie night when it comes to Hopkins Cinema.
In November (Nov 30) we will read Deep Creek by Dana Hand.
The next book we will read is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver (date TBD as the last Sunday is Dec 25)
This is also a test email, so please email Kate if you get it.

Hello guys!

I've missed a lot of them so I wouldn't want to miss the next one.
May is a wonderful time for that, visiting such event would be a great start of sunny summer season!

Anyone interested in going to St. Kate's on Wed. night at 7 PM to hear Sheryl WuDunn speak?
I am planning to go with a bookclub friend from Maple Plain, who was profoundly influenced by the book. I don't have the details of just where the talk will take place...

foods for Deep Creek bookclub meeting this Sunday night
Anyone have any ideas about foods for this meeting? I think the miners would have used canned foods and biscuits and game and fish, but maybe Chinese food? Joe made chili when he ran the hotel, and I think they maybe ate fried chicken a few times for get-togethers. I don't think that I will have time to make anything, will have to pick something up at the store on the way to Beatriz's. I liked the book.
food for Sunday
I definitely think someone should make chili, although it won't be me! I have a cut & color at 3 at Ridgedale and will be coming directly from there . . . yes, that takes 2-1/2 hours.
I could bring canned biscuits or salad.
Anybody need the book?
I bought and have finished reading "Deep Creek" if anyone wants to borrow it.
November Book and Meeting Date
Hi All,
November's meeting date is actually December 4 at 6:00, Beatriz's house.
We are reading "Deep Creek" by Dana Hand, the pen name for two Princeton University professors, Midwestern Unitarians both.
Some highlights of the book
.... the Washington Post named "Deep Creek" a Best Novel of 2010;
...the main characters are a Unitarian judge, a strong, intelligent Native American woman, and an Asian student, fighting for racial justice and gender equality in a prejudiced age;
…the story centers on immigration as a moral issue in America, which is a current UU study/action topic.
… it's based on real people and events, too long forgotten: the 1887 massacre of Chinese gold miners in Hells Canyon, one lawman's lonely quest to track their killers, and the sham race-murder trial that followed.
